Think you’re a good guitarist?
Well, you may just want to down tools and watch the “Charlie Hunter – Solos Jazz Sessions” DVD to evaluate just how “good” you are…
…Charlie Hunter is an extremely gifted musician, with a very down to earth approach, whose mastery of the 8-string guitar is a pleasure to witness…
This is going to be a short, but sweet review. There’s not too much to say except I thoroughly recommend watching this DVD. Even if jazz isn’t your genre of choice, there’s no doubt you’ll be seriously impressed by Charlie Hunters musical talent.
Charlie Hunter is an excellent guitarist, but I have to say I have no idea what he’s like at playing a 6-string guitar, as this DVD focuses on Charlie’s ability of mastering the 8-string guitar. His “guitar face” expressions seen throughout the DVD sums up the focus and joy of his playing!
The instrument in the spot light was manufactured by Novax Guitars. It looks and sounds seriously impressive and I often found myself wondering how many prototypes Novax must have made before they settled on a final design.
Even though the DVD is labelled with as a “jazz” offering, you’ll actually discover that Charlie Hunter blends a mix of different genres into his playing, especially funk and blues. Watching him bend the strings on the 8-string Novax raised my eyebrows a couple of times! It sounded great.
From a personal perspective, it was nice that the DVD clearly displayed Charlie’s guitar equipment; with his choice of amplifiers on display, along with his pedalboard. It’s nice to see Charlie working the volume pedal (in most of his performances) whilst mastering his use of the 8-String.
The DVD is of high quality, using multiple camera angles and is less than an hour in duration. The content of the DVD blends a balanced mix of musical performance and interviews with Charlie himself, who comes across as a very down to earth, unassuming individual.
If you’re looking for some inspiration in your playing or simply fancy watching something slightly different from the guitar playing norm, I thoroughly recommend you get your hands on this DVD. Charlie Hunter is an extremely gifted musician, with a very down to earth approach, whose mastery of the 8-string guitar is a pleasure to witness.
